A wig that fits well feels secure and comfortable, and it makes the hairline look more natural. A cap that's too tight can cause pressure and headaches. One that's too loose can shift or lift at the edges. Measuring your head takes about five minutes and is the best way to choose the right cap size before you order.
What You Need
- A soft, flexible measuring tape (a sewing tape works well)
- A mirror, or someone to help
- Your hair flattened as much as possible, the way you would wear it under a wig (for example, braided or under a wig cap)
Step 1: Measure Your Head Circumference
Circumference is the most important measurement for choosing a cap size.
- Place the start of the tape at the center of your forehead, just at your natural hairline.
- Guide the tape just above one ear, around the back of your head along the nape of your neck, above the other ear, and back to the starting point.
- Keep the tape flat and comfortably snug, not tight.
- Write down the measurement, then measure a second time to confirm it.
Step 2: Take the Supporting Measurements
These help you compare your head to a specific cap's dimensions:
- Front to nape: from your front hairline, over the top of your head, to the nape of your neck.
- Ear to ear across the forehead: from the top of one ear, along the front hairline, to the top of the other ear.
- Ear to ear over the top: from the top of one ear, over the crown, to the top of the other ear.
- Nape width: across the back of your neck at the hairline.
Step 3: Match Your Measurement to a Cap Size
Use your circumference to find a general cap size. These are the same ranges used by the Wig Size Calculator on our homepage and product pages:
| Cap size | Head circumference |
|---|---|
| Small | Up to 21.5 in (54.6 cm) |
| Medium | Over 21.5 in up to 22.5 in (57.2 cm) |
| Large | Over 22.5 in (57.2 cm) |
Most wig caps include adjustable straps and combs, so you can fine-tune the fit within a range. Cap construction can vary by product, so always check the sizing details on the product page before ordering.
Tips for an Accurate Result
- Measure the way you'll wear the wig. If you braid or cornrow your hair underneath, measure over the braids.
- Don't pull the tape tight. A tight tape gives a smaller number, which can lead to a cap that feels restrictive.
- If you're between sizes, the adjustable straps usually make the larger size the more comfortable choice.
- Measure twice. If the two results differ, measure a third time and use the most consistent number.
Before You Wear It: Try It On First
When your wig arrives, try it on over a wig cap before cutting the lace, washing, or styling it. This lets you check the fit while the wig is still in its original condition. Under our Return & Refund Policy, wigs returned for a change of mind must be unworn (apart from a reasonable try-on), unwashed, uncut and unaltered, with the lace intact.
